Acoustic Africa

Acoustic Africa

After a first edition in 2006 & 2007 with Habib Koite, Dobet Gnahore & Vusi Mahalasela, the second exhilarating musical journey focuses on the of the African women. If the power of the song is a reality in many places, it is a certainty in Africa. So what do you expect when African singers express themselves: this power is a fact!

Listen to the power of song, of singing, in the voices of Dobet Gnahoré, Manou Gallo and Kareyce Fotso.

Three voices of women from the Ivory Coast and Cameroon, three stage presences, three outlooks, three movements… but sharing the same spirit. And this, a dynamic song, deeply rooted in an approach that never denies its ancestral roots but welcomes influences from African and Afro-American movements such as funk, blues and Afro-pop.

It is a part of Africa that sings its deeply feminine side, and, for the US tour in Fall 2012, with the help and complicity of another woman, the renowned American guitarist, Leni Stern, whose most recent experiences on African soil have been nourished by the best raw musicians, most notably Bassekou Kouyaté, while learning to play the ngoni.

Two essential musicians bring this ensemble of women a rhythmic and melodic environment of the highest level: Aly Keita, the master Malian balafonist and Boris Tchango, the Togolese drummer, who has already been noticed playing with Dobet Gnahoré and Foofango.

At the heart of this group, the three African singers give their songs a power multiplied by shared experiences.

Van Merwijk’s Music Machine with Manou Gallo

Van Merwijk’s Music Machine with Manou Gallo

Lucas Van Merwijk’s Music Machine is (to quote Tina Turner) “as funky as a mosquito’s tweeter”.
This time, Lucas van Merwijk, master of the drum beat, has invited ace bass player/singer/guitarist/percussionist and songwriter Manou Gallo to join him.
This charismatic artist from Ivory Coast surprised her family, friends, and neighbours by focusing on African percussion, which was considered contrary to the traditions of the Djiboi clan. Only men had been allowed to play percussion, but Manou dug in her heels!
You may expect highlife, groove funk, jazz, and a strong dose of Latin too of this fiery, explosive combinaition.
